Lewis Wilkenfeld, President
Lewis and his wife, Serena Brooks, began “temple-shopping” on the westside while expecting their first child. They visited Leo Baeck Temple and immediately fell in love. Both of their children were blessed and celebrated their B’nai Mitzvah at LBT, which continues to be a spiritual home for them, three decades later.
Lewis first focused his energy on activities related to his kids. He collaborated with other LBT members in re-energizing the Purim Carnival and creating the Youth Education Committee, and initiated a Room Parent program. More recently, Lewis took on programming for the “Empty Nesters & Friends” demographic, members looking to engage with LBT after their kids have left home. Programs have included walks and hikes, pickleball tournaments, and “Managing the Marathon,” a support group helping those who take care of an aging parent to make space for their own needs.
Lewis served three separate terms as a member of the Board of Trustees, and joined the Executive Committee in 2024. He was honored to be named the “Angel” at 2011’s Heroes & Angels dinner. He is especially grateful for his partner and wife, Serena Brooks, who brings her own unique artistic gifts to the LBT community. They are the proud parents of Melody and Jesse Wilkenfeld, who have turned into remarkable adults, due in great part to their LBT childhood.
In the “real world,” Lewis is a professional theatre director and producer, responsible for over 200 live theatre productions across the country during his 45-year career.
Throughout his Leo Baeck Temple journey, Lewis has remained committed to creating and supporting a collaborative and engaged community. He is passionate about the integral role that lay leadership plays in the success of a congregation, and relishes his partnership with clergy and staff. It is his honor and privilege to serve as Leo Baeck Temple’s president.
